4th most played computer game? HALO 2 (PC)

Wow. People ARE playing this game. According to Nielsen's GamePlay Metrics, HALO 2 is the 4th most played video game right now. Actually, HALO: Combat Evolved is the second most played video game right now.

It sounds a little fishy to me. HALO and HALO 2 are great games, but the Nielsen rankings don't support my findings. Heck, they aren't even close to Gamespy's stats. According to Gamespy, HALO 2 is the 9th most popular game right now judged by online users. As of this post, HALO has 2555 online players. In first place is Half-Life with over 72,488 players. Wolfenstein has over 8,000 users online right now.

Maybe I'm comparing apples to oranges. The Gamespy rankings are based on the number of online users. The Nilesen rankings are based on how much a person played a video game and only sample a small portion of the gaming community. Perhaps the people that are still playing HALO are the diehard fans who play for many minutes (or hours) per session. But that doesn't explain why the recently released HALO 2 is doing so well.

Still, this is positive news for HALO. This means that Bungie has built immersive games.

Yeah, I don't know rapture,

Yeah, I don't know rapture, but these findings smell like bullshit to me.

They are. I know

They are. I know Counter-Strike: Source has about 100,000 unique players a day, and I believe either World of Warcraft or CS 1.6 comes in second. Halo PC isn't even in the top 15, and Halo 2 PC? Don't make me laugh. I don't think Halo 2 PC is even on the list.

Heck, you can even check Xfire's list. WoW is always top, followed by Call of Duty 2, CS:S, Battlefield 2, Guild Wars, Silkroad Online, Wolf: Enemy Territory, W3: FT, CS 1.6, and then CoD United Offense Multi. Keep in mind that in the face of legitimacy, Xfire is one of the most played online services out there with over seven million users. Steam and Gamespy are the only other services that succeed it, and they're not ranking Halo or Halo 2 for the PC any where near the top ten.

You should really do some research before blatantly posting stuff like this.

Indeed, although I think CS 1.6 is still more popular.

Although not every gamer uses Xfire, this is nonetheless undeniable.

Oh, rapture himself thought this was some fishy stuff--he didn't make this up, someone else did.

It is ranked by average

It is ranked by average number of minutes per week played. That doesn't = number of unique users. All it means is that the few people who do play halo 2 are playing it for a long time. Rapture said that or hinted at it in his original post.

...so it could be true.

Number of minutes a player

Agamemnon's picture

Number of minutes a player plays =/= most played game. If there's only three people left that play Tribes and they play 40 hours a week, then it would be number one on that chart. Would that then mean it is the most played game? Obviously not, as only three people are playing the game. What Rapture actually said in his original post is that "Halo 2 is the 4th most played video game right now. Actually, HALO: Combat Evolved is the second most played video game right now," which still does not equate the number of players.

I can go glance casually at the number of players on Halo PC versus Counter-Strike and the numbers don't even come close. Halo PC continues to die slowly and Halo 2 Vista has never picked up (and never will, thankfully). Again, this is smoke and mirrors.
